Once you have made your list of monthly expenses, list the top two credit cards. The ones with the most debt. These two credit cards are your first targets. look at the top of your credit card statement and copy down the, "Minimum Payment" figure. Now double it. To have any hope at all of getting out of debt you must begin to pay the doubled amount. Triple and quadruple is even better. It will shorten the time the more that you can pay.

Take all of the credit cards that you have out of your wallet. Get them from the wife and girlfriend. Don't cut them up...yet. You are going to need the information off the back of them. Most important is the 800 number.

Now we begin the hard part. You have to take the responsibility to get your interest rate reduced. It is what most of the companies do that advertise debt consolidation and reduction. Call the 800 number on the back of your card. Navigate through the menu until you are talking to a human being. Quite simply tell them that you are working on a debt consolidation plan and need their help. Most likely you are at the top per centage rate of their interest tier because you have been late with a payment. Ask them to reduce your interest rate. They will resist. Don't be afraid to climb the corporate ladder.. If the first person turns you down, just say, "let me speak to your supervisor." and then beginning again with, " I am trying to put together a debt consolidation plan." Eventually you will find someone who will help.

If you are no good at keeping records, this is where you change your ways. On a sheet of paper. A separate sheet for each credit card, Make a note of the time, date, and name of the person or persons that you spoke to at the credit card company. Do not tell anyone that you wish to cancel the credit card. They want to be assured that you will remain a customer. The reason to keep a record of your calls that you may have to call certain credit card companies back month after month until they see reason. When you talk to these folks. Be calm. Nothing can hurt you over the phone. After a few calls you will begging to become comfortable as a credit card counselor. Some people really quake at the thought of calling a credit card company and asking for something. Reduce my interest, take off the penalties, change the date of my payments. Have no fear. The people behind the phone most times are not cruel Simon Lagree types. They want your continued business and they certainly do not want you to file bankruptcy. If you do that they lose the whole ball of wax. Still, be prepared for a long hard fight and a climb up the corporate ladder. The person who answers the phone in the fist instance may simply not have to power to get you what you want. Don't hesitate to talk to her boss. And her boss, if need be.

If you are getting dunning phone calls from credit card companies use he opportunity and their dime to explain how they can help you releive the burden of debt and get payed at the same time. It is wise to always be calm, friendly, and polite when talking to these folks. They hear enough hollering and crying in a day. Don't fit into that mold. Polite reasonable conversation will be your honey. Let others use the vinegar.
