Take all of the credit cards that you
have out of your wallet. Get them from the wife and
girlfriend. Don't cut them up...yet. You are going to need
the information off the back of them. Most important is the
800 number.
Now we begin the hard part. You have
to take the responsibility to get your interest rate
reduced. It is what most of the companies do that advertise
debt consolidation and reduction. Call the 800 number on the
back of your card. Navigate through the menu until you are
talking to a human being. Quite simply tell them that you
are working on a debt consolidation plan and need their
help. Most likely you are at the top per centage rate of
their interest tier because you have been late with a
payment. Ask them to reduce your interest rate. They will
resist. Don't be afraid to climb the corporate ladder.. If
the first person turns you down, just say, "let me speak to
your supervisor." and then beginning again with, " I am
trying to put together a debt consolidation plan."
Eventually you will find someone who will help.
If you are no good at keeping records,
this is where you change your ways. On a sheet of paper. A
separate sheet for each credit card, Make a note of the
time, date, and name of the person or persons that you spoke
to at the credit card company. Do not tell anyone that you
wish to cancel the credit card. They want to be assured that
you will remain a customer. The reason to keep a record of
your calls that you may have to call certain credit card
companies back month after month until they see reason. When
you talk to these folks. Be calm. Nothing can hurt you over
the phone. After a few calls you will begging to become
comfortable as a credit card counselor. Just because you are
acting for yourself does not mean that is not exactly what
you are.
Some people really quake at the thought of calling a credit card
company and asking for something. Reduce my interest, take off the
penalties, change the date of my payments. Have no fear. The people
behind the phone most times are not cruel Simon Lagree types. They
want your continued business and they certainly do not want you to
file bankruptcy. If you do that they lose the whole ball of wax.
Still, be prepared for a long hard fight and a climb up the corporate
ladder. The person who answers the phone in the fist instance may
simply not have to power to get you what you want. Don't hesitate to
talk to her boss. And her boss, if need be.
If you are getting dunning phone calls from credit card companies use he opportunity and their dime to explain how they can help you releive the burden of debt and get payed at the same time. It is wise to always be calm, friendly, and polite when talking to these folks. They hear enough hollering and crying in a day. Don't fit into that mold. Polite reasonable conversation will be your honey. Let others use the vinegar.
